Friend and colleague in the Young Christian Workers

I have known Mary throughout my life through the Young Christian Workers. It began when Mary and husband Terry put me up for the night when I was on the road as a YCW Organiser and their family lived on the coast. Later when I was married, Mary and Terry and daughters came to live in Upper Norwood where my family lived and joined our parish of Virgo Fidelis. Mary and Terry, their children and ours (wife Margaret) talked after Mass and the families got to know one another. At this time I started a YCW section in the parish and a great friend of Mary and Terry - Joyce Driver- also started a group and their girls were part of these groups. Sometime after Mary and Terry moved to Beckenham I joined the management Committee of the London YCW. Mary was our Chair and the MC shepherded full time YCW organisers and dealt with the business side. Margaret I and family came to Mary and Terry's Christmas drinks which we all enjoyed. Mary and Terry were so hospitable. Much later I caught up with Mary and Terry's daughter Anna at St Andrew's parish Thornton Heath when I was full time youth coordinator for Croydon deanery and Anna's daughter joined a YCW IMPACT section which I started.
Mary was a formidable character and quite focused when she set her sights on something. A true apostle for working people especially young people. A stalwart for Justice and Peace in the diocese.
My heart goes out to her family and there is a sadness that she suffered from Alzheimers. But she was cared for in a wonderful nursing home although at a very difficult time in the Pandemic. Above all Mary was a Christian and a Catholic with a personal and active Faith. I believe Mary is in her heavenly home immersed in the love and presence of God and meeting up with her YCW comrades who have gone before. May she pray for us as we pray for her until we meet on that day.
It was a privilege to know Mary and Terry.
